You must file Form 2290 and pay the tax
The vehicle is a taxable highway motor vehicle at or above 55,000 lbs taxable gross weight, operating on public highways above the mileage use limit. File and pay by the deadline below, then keep the IRS-stamped Schedule 1 — your state will not renew registration without it.
First use in August means your Form 2290 is due by the last day of September. Filing late brings a penalty of 4.5% of the tax due per month for up to five months, plus interest — and no stamped Schedule 1, which means no plate renewal.
| Annual rate per vehicle | $550.00 |
| Months remaining in the July–June period | 11 |
| Prorated tax per vehicle | $504.17 |
| Estimated total for 1 vehicle | $504.17 |
Estimate based on the Form 2290 tax table ($100 at 55,000 lbs, +$22 per additional 1,000 lbs, capped at $550 for 75,000 lbs and above; logging vehicles at 75% of those rates). Confirm against the current IRS instructions before you pay.
Gather this before you file
Everything the IRS e-file system will ask for, based on your answers.
- Employer Identification Number (EIN) — the IRS will not accept an SSN on Form 2290, and a brand-new EIN takes about 2 weeks to become active in the e-file system
- Exact business name and address as registered with the IRS (a mismatch is the most common e-file rejection)
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for every vehicle being reported — checked character by character
- Taxable gross weight for each vehicle: unloaded truck + unloaded trailer customarily used + maximum load customarily carried
- Month of first use on a public highway for each vehicle in this tax period
- Prior year's stamped Schedule 1, if you have one, to reconcile the vehicle list
- Payment method: EFTPS enrollment, direct debit routing and account numbers, EFW authorization, or a card payment through an IRS-approved processor
- Bank account and routing number if paying by electronic funds withdrawal
- A place to store the stamped Schedule 1 — you'll need it for IRP/apportioned plate renewal, state registration, and at least 3 years of IRS recordkeeping
This tool is a planning aid, not tax advice. Weight ratings, exemptions and credits can change your liability.
The 2290 comes back every single July.
We file 2290s for carriers, chase the stamped Schedule 1, handle VIN corrections, credits for sold or destroyed trucks, and keep it lined up with your IRP renewal so registration never lapses. One less July deadline to remember.
