How Tennessee actually works

Tennessee runs motor carrier accounts through the Department of Revenue, and almost everything you touch as a TN-based carrier goes through TNTAP, the Tennessee Taxpayer Access Point. That's where your IRP account and your IFTA license and quarterly returns live. If you've ever locked yourself out of TNTAP the week a quarter closed, you already know why carriers call us.

If you aren't IFTA-licensed and you only cross Tennessee once in a while, the state sells a temporary fuel-use permit that's good for up to 7 consecutive days. That's a trip-basis option, not a substitute for an IFTA license. Run Tennessee regularly and you want the license and the quarterly return, not a stack of trip permits.

Apportioned plates are the other half of it. IRP is mileage-apportioned across every jurisdiction you run, so your renewal is only as good as your mileage records. We keep the renewal calendar, tell you what distance schedule the state is going to ask for, and help you get it filed in TNTAP instead of guessing at it the night before.

Why a Tennessee desk matters
