Almost every shipper and broker in the country uses the same formula: take the current diesel price, subtract the base (peg) price written into the contract, and divide the difference by an assumed miles-per-gallon. That's your surcharge per mile. The two numbers worth fighting over are the peg price and the MPG assumption — a contract that assumes 7 MPG when your fleet runs 5.8 quietly transfers the entire fuel increase onto you.
| Diesel price | 5.5 MPG | 6.5 MPG | 7.5 MPG |
|---|---|---|---|
| $3.00 | $0.318 | $0.269 | $0.233 |
| $3.50 | $0.409 | $0.346 | $0.300 |
| $4.00 | $0.500 | $0.423 | $0.367 |
| $4.50 | $0.591 | $0.500 | $0.433 |
| $5.00 | $0.682 | $0.577 | $0.500 |
| $5.50 | $0.773 | $0.654 | $0.567 |

Fuel costs money. So do fuel taxes.
Every gallon you buy and every mile you run feeds an IFTA return four times a year. We collect the mileage and receipts, apply the right quarterly rates including surcharge states, and file it for you.
